From one nurse leader to another
I’m David West, a registered nurse and assistant director in surgical services with an MBA in healthcare administration. My work has taken me through ambulatory surgery, medical devices, service-line coordination and OR management—including broader leadership responsibilities during a director vacancy.
When I accepted the role as manager, my hiring director left before I had the transition I expected. I had emails, stacks of paper and brief instructions. I assembled a binder over time, but learning to lead took conversations, difficult decisions and experience. That gap is why I build these resources.
I write for the leader who knows the clinical work and is learning what the next responsibility requires. I want these resources to help when you have a question, a conversation ahead or a decision you need to think through.
